GHIN App Privacy Policy

 Last Updated:  December 2011

The United States Golf Association (“USGA,” “we,” “us,” “our”) is making the Golf Handicap & Information Network Application (the “GHIN App”) available to you on behalf of the various state and regional golf associations throughout the United States who utilize GHIN (the “Associations”). We created this GHIN App Privacy Policy (“Policy”) to explain to you that all information collected through the GHIN App is being performed on behalf of the particular Association with which you, or your preferred golf club, are affiliated.  This Policy also explains how we will use, share, and protect your information after it is collected.  By using the GHIN App, you agree to the terms of this Policy as they may be amended from time to time.

USGA offers the GHIN App (on behalf of the Associations) to help facilitate a high quality handicap computation service.  Our role is limited to that of a service provider to the Associations.  Although we may technically collect and have access to the information submitted through the GHIN App, the Associations are solely responsible for its use and disclosure to third parties.

This Policy does not apply to information provided to (or obtained by) us or any Association other than through your use of the GHIN App.

What information is collected?

We may collect two types of information from users of the GHIN App:  (1) personal information that identifies or can be used to identify or contact an individual and (2) non-personal information concerning the use of the GHIN App.

Personal Information:  We may collect personal information (such as names, e-mail addresses, telephone numbers, mailing addresses, payment card information, and demographic information) when it is provided to us through the GHIN App.  We also collect and display to third parties information about your Handicap Index® (e.g., your Handicap Index® and scores).

Non-Personal Information:  When you use the GHIN App, our servers may automatically collect your IP address.  Our servers may also record your mobile device’s identification number and/or create our own unique numerical identifier for it so that we can recognize your device when it communicates with our servers, and associate it with your account.  In addition, our servers may capture information about your usage of the GHIN App; what you see, click on and/or delete; the type of device, platform, Internet access, related software and settings you are using; and other usage activity and data, such as date and time stamps.  In some cases, this information may be linked to your Personal Information.  Any or all of these activities with regard to Non-Personal Information may be performed on our behalf by our services providers.

How is my information used?

The Association to which you belong is solely responsible for the use of the information collected in connection with the GHIN App.  As a service provider to the Associations, we collect and hold the information, and make it available to your Association upon request.  To understand what uses the Association makes of your information, please consult the specific Association with which you are affiliated.  We may also use your information in ways which are reasonably required to make the GHIN App available to you or to improve its performance such as to:

  • provide you with the GHIN App and authenticate you when you use it
  • respond to your requests, questions, and concerns
  • develop new features and offerings
  • customize the App for your use
  • protect our rights and property and prevent violations of the GHIN App Terms of Use

Do we share Personal and Non-Personal Information with others?

We will share Personal and Non-Personal Information with the Association with which you are affiliated and any other entity requested by your Association or the Association’s behalf.  After any such information is provided to your Association, the Association will become solely responsible for deciding how that Personal and Non-Personal Information is shared with others.  You should contact your Association, or review its applicable privacy policy, to learn more about how it uses and shares Personal and Non-Personal Information.

In addition to the kinds of sharing engaged in by your Association, we may share Personal and Non-Personal Information collected pursuant to this Policy:

  • with third parties who need it in order to provide services to us (or on our behalf) in connection with making the GHIN App available to you or improving its performance
  • when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary or appropriate to protect any person’s rights or interests, investigate fraud or respond to a legal request
  • in connection with a corporate change including a merger, acquisition, change of control, reorganization, sale of assets, bankruptcy, dissolution, or liquidation
