Mare Island Golf Club was established in 1892 and is one of the oldest golf courses west of the Mississippi River.  It was originally built as a 9-hole course, starting near the former Marine Barracks and proceeded south to Lake Rodgers (named after Admiral Rodgers) and returned to the start.  For the first 30-years, it had sand greens and dry fairways and was noted for its unusual hazards - Lake Rodgers, rattlesnakes, ground squirrels and a horse.  A snake anti-venmon kit was available on a fence post at Lake Rodgers. (Yikes!)

Through WWI and WWII the course was re-designed to accommodate the wars - ammunition bunkers, Homoja huts and other demands.  See if you can find the remaining ten bunkers (hint: one houses the maintenance facility and one used to serve as a snack shack at the turn).  In 2000, nine new holes were re-introduced.  Today, there has been a reconfirguation of the order of playing the 18-holes for your links-style golfing journey with magnificent views of San Pablo Bay, Napa River, Mt. Tamalpais and sometimes the Golden Gate Bridge.  No other Bay Area course has more panoramic vistas!
